In Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhua, RAW Agent Vinod (Saif Ali Khan) is rescued by colleague Rajan (Ravi Kishan) from a rogue Pakistani army officer (Shahbaz Khan). In Russia/Uzbekistan, an ex-KGB Officer is tortured and murdered. In Cape Town, a group of international business tycoons discusses a rumor that the dead KGB officer possessed a nuclear suitcase bomb. In Moscow, Rajan is exposed and shot dead while trying to send a Code Red message to India. In India, the head of RAW sees the incomplete message containing just number 242. Agent Vinod undertakes a globe-trotting secret mission to discover the reason why his colleague, Rajan, was murdered. A series of twists and turns take Vinod across the globe to Morocco and Latvia, Karachi to Delhi and finally London where he discovers the actual conspiracy.

In the Dasht-E-Margoh desert in remote Afghanistan, inside a Taliban camp, an ISI official, Col. Huzefa (Shahbaz Khan), is interrogating a captured man (Saif Ali Khan) suspected to be a Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), agent. The man offers up details about RAW's operations in Afghanistan in exchange for money and safe passage across the border. He betrays his colleague, Major Rajan (Ravi Kissen), who has also infiltrated the camp. This is only a ruse, as both overpower their captors and fight their way out of the camp. Along the way, they rescue a girl called Farah (Maryam Zakaria). The man is actually a RAW agent and his nom-de-guerre is Agent Vinod.

On its opening day, the movie collected INR9.41 crore (US$1.7 million) at the box office. The movie showed less growth during the next two days ultimately grossing around INR18 crore (US$3.26 million) in its first weekend.[24] Agent Vinod went on to earn a total of INR36.75 crore (US$6.65 million) during its first week. The film's worldwide collection amounted to around INR54 crore (US$9.77 million), and was officially declared a box-office failure.
